Many health clubs and community centers are beginning to offer separate areas for men and women to comfortably exercise without feeling judged or intimidated. The more comfortable people are while exercising in a gym the more likely they’ll come back.
Unfortunately, this practice can lead discrimination, even if unintentionally, when it comes to equipment available. Men’s sections tend to have more strength equipment and less cardio, while the opposite is true for women’s sections. If your fitness facility is going to provide separate areas for men and women to exercise, be sure that each area offers the same equipment for all members to achieve their fitness goals, no matter what they may be.
Provide the Same Equipment in Both Areas
While separate areas allow members to feel more comfortable while exercising, the same equipment should be provided in both men and women’s areas. Don’t assume that women don’t want to use strength equipment because they fear “bulking up.” Each person has their own fitness regimen and it is up to you to provide the necessary equipment to each and every member regardless of gender so they may reach any fitness goal they choose.
Provide Enough Equipment in Both Areas
While supplying the same equipment is necessary to avoid discrimination, you also have to provide enough equipment to serve members equally. For example, don’t assume that women don’t use free-weights as often as men and therefore supply them with fewer dumbbells. If there aren’t enough to sufficiently go around, it can lead to members feeling as if their needs aren’t being satisfied.
By simply placing fitness equipment in men’s and women’s areas equally, gender discriminatory issues can be avoided. If you’re unsure what strength equipment to provide for your members, hand out surveys. Members will be able to tell you what strength equipment they’d like to have in their gym.
