March 14th is “Pi Day” and what better way to celebrate than sharing some healthy desserts to pass along to your clients? Establishing a healthy diet doesn’t mean that you have to rid your life or your client’s life of sweets altogether. It’s actually good to treat yourself once in a while and satisfy that sweet tooth with some healthier dessert choices:

Grab a Yogurt for a Quick Sweet SnackCOMM Week 2A

While yogurt can often contain high amounts of sugar, the live cultures and fruit within are quite good for you. Inform your clients that this quick and easy, grab-and-go snack is a great alternative to things such as ice cream and cookies. However, advise clients not to go overboard by overindulging and consuming many containers of yogurt each day. The recommended serving of yogurt is one cup a day.

Indulge in Some Fresh Fruit

While fresh fruit may seem obvious, people tend to forget that when they are craving something sweet that they can simply grab their favorite fruit to satisfy the craving. The natural sugars within fruit are something you will want to monitor, but they also contain vitamins and minerals to make a healthy dessert choice any day. For adults, the maximum serving of fruit per day is two cups.

Create Homemade Smoothies

Healthy, homemade smoothies are also a wonderful way to satisfy your sweet craving while receiving the nutrients of fresh fruit. Homemade is recommended over pre-packaged since clients will have more control over what ingredients go into it. Even then, make sure clients aren’t adding additional sugars and sweeteners, as it will counter the healthy benefit. As usual, also advise them to avoid overindulging.

Make Your Own Version of Packaged Snacks

While some “healthy” brands of snacks claim that their snack is good for you, tell your clients to check the ingredients on the label. Even though the calorie and sugar contents may be low, there may be added preservatives and artificial flavors that you don’t want. Sometimes, making a snack at home with fresh ingredients is the better alternative for your healthy lifestyle.
